Abstract

This essay is about one of the most important abstract theoretical discussions of research methodology, specifically in the social sciences: the similarities and differences of what is known as “dataism” and “dadaism”. First, the epistemological characterization of each one is outlined. Then, the argument about the posture assumed according to the topic, and finally, how this theoretical discussion influences the construction of a research design. From the social sciences perspective, one of the main concerns is the capacity to infer results, and that such inference allows generalizing. This concern is the centerpiece of positivism. However, there is another side called constructivism in which what matters is not the inference, but the understanding of the social fact. Within this context, we develop the discussion around the dataism and dadaism, ending with an example of research proposal we are currently developing.
