Abstract

Transcriptions of the speeches delivered August 15th, 1919, are presented here together with a description of the commemoration as reported in the newspapers. The 400th anniversary of the founding of Panama City is clearly framed by a national construction proposal in which the vindication of the Hispanic past confronts the North American imperial push and its Isthmian enclave. The dissatisfaction of the local elites with US hegemony after the opening of the Panama Canal is symbolically channeled by emphasizing the Hispanic source of all things identitary, avoiding alternate, more inclusive historical narratives, denying social conflict and disguising ethnic and linguistic diversity as seen in the decorated floats.
