Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the different spheres of functioning of society worldwide, including mental health. The pandemic and its impact have been recognized by international entities such as the United Nations (UN, 2020) and the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO, 2020). Everyday new infections and patients recovered from the disease have been reported, but they have had to deal with the remaining biopsychosocial consequences related to the disease, called post-COVID conditions (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). In patients recovered from COVID-19, one of the alterations described in the clinic corresponds to mental health, which has been documented in scientific studies. This study aimed to analyze existing research on emotional disturbances in patients recovered from COVID-19, in order to recognize the mental health status of individuals in the post-COVID stage and to generate recommendations for the psycho-emotional management of those recovered from the disease in Panama. Non-experimental design, documentary research was used, through an exhaustive search of international and Latin American research, in scientific and open access databases. The results revealed that the mental health of recovered COVID-19 patients has been affected. Anxiety and insomnia symptoms, as well as depressive and post-traumatic stress symptoms were the most frequent emotional alterations. Monitoring and preventive actions are emphasized as measures for the management of post-COVID mental health disorders.
